Pundit: By backing Armenia, France is heading for another failure
Naim Asas, President of the French Centre for Strategic Analysis and Geopolitical Studies, has offered his insights into the escalating tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia, particularly surrounding France's involvement in arming Armenia.
Speaking to GDH, Asas reflected on the diplomatic ramifications of France's stance, especially in the context of growing hostilities at the Azerbaijan-Armenia border, Caliber.Az reports.
Following an increase in border violations, which heightened tensions between the two nations, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern over the rising volatility in the region. In response, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned this statement as hypocritical, citing France's role in exacerbating the situation by supplying arms to Armenia.
Asas strongly criticised France's approach, asserting: “France’s rapprochement with Armenia is neither humanitarian nor moral. The decision-makers in Paris are engaging in opportunism.” He further highlighted the influence of the Armenian diaspora on French foreign policy, noting that this influence has shaped the narrative that presents Armenia as the last bastion of the Francophone world, Christian heritage, and democratic ideals.
In his analysis, Asas argued that France’s involvement in Armenia and the wider Caucasus region was a desperate attempt to maintain its global power status, particularly after failures in Sahel, the Pacific, and the Eastern Mediterranean.
“In the wake of these setbacks, France is now investing in the Caucasus through Armenia,” he said.
Asas also drew attention to the failure of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group, in which France is a key participant. He pointed out that the Group’s inability to foster peace in the Caucasus remains a notable failure.
Concluding his remarks, Asas warned that France's support for Armenia would lead to further diplomatic and strategic failure.
"By backing Armenia, France is heading towards yet another failure," he stated. "This approach will make it impossible for France to secure a stake in projects related to Zangezur and the surrounding areas."
