Putin backs US-led ceasefire extension in Iran during call with Trump
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed support for the United States’ decision to extend the ceasefire regime in Iran during a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, according to the Kremlin.
“Putin believes that Trump’s decision to extend the ceasefire regime regarding Iran is the right one, as it should provide an opportunity for negotiations and generally help stabilise the situation,” Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov said, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
According to him, Putin also drew attention to the extremely negative consequences that could arise for Iran, its neighbouring states, and the entire international community if the United States and Israel were to resort to renewed military action.
From the Russian side’s perspective, a particularly dangerous scenario would be a potential ground operation on Iranian territory.
According to Ushakov, Putin presented US leader Donald Trump with a series of initiatives aimed at normalising the situation in Iran.
“Russia is firmly committed to providing all possible assistance to diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the crisis and has put forward a number of considerations aimed at resolving disagreements surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme,” he said at a briefing.
Ushakov noted that Russia will continue active contacts with representatives of Iran, leaders of the Gulf states, Israel, as well as with the American negotiating team.
“Trump outlined his assessment of the outcomes of the recently concluded phase of the military confrontation, as well as his views on the difficult situation in which Iran and its leadership currently find themselves,” the presidential aide added.
