Qatar sends message to UN about Iran's attack on its territory
Qatar has sent an official communication to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, US Ambassador to the UN Michael Waltz, and the UN Security Council chair regarding an attack by Iran on Qatari territory, Qatar News Agency reports.
The document describes the attack as a gross violation of national sovereignty, a direct threat to the country’s security and territorial integrity, and an unacceptable escalation that endangers regional stability.
The message was delivered by Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Sheikh Ali Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani.
Qatar’s Ministry of Defense reported the downing of two Iranian Su-24 aircraft and the successful interception of seven ballistic missiles and five drones targeting various parts of the country.
Two of the drone attacks were aimed at critical infrastructure: water reservoirs at the Mesaieed power plant and an energy facility in the industrial city of Ras Laffan operated by QatarEnergy. No casualties were reported. All damage will be assessed by competent authorities, and Qatar pledged to keep the UN and Security Council informed of developments.
The document also emphasised that Qatar strongly condemns these attacks and reserves the right to respond in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, proportionate to the nature of the assault, to defend its sovereignty and national interests. The country requested that the letter be circulated as an official UN Security Council document.
