Romania safe under NATO, US presence, says president
Romanian President Nicușor Dan said that his country remains secure despite recent statements from Iran, citing the country’s NATO membership and the presence of US forces, Digi24 reports.
Speaking in Brussels after a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Dan downplayed the significance of Tehran’s remarks, stressing that they should not be interpreted as direct threats.
“We are closely monitoring what Iran’s Foreign Ministry said regarding Romania. Romania has not been threatened. They spoke about political and legal consequences. We are in the same situation as one, two, or three months ago. Romania is protected: it is part of NATO, has a strategic partnership with the United States, and, thanks to the additional presence of American troops, is in a more secure position,” he said.
Iran earlier this week warned Romania of potential political and legal repercussions after Romania allowed the United States to use military bases on its territory for operations targeting Iran.
