Russia conducts maiden flight of modernized Tu‑22M3M strategic bomber
Russia’s deeply modernized Tu‑22M3M missile-carrying bomber completed its first flight from the Kazan Aviation Plant named after S. P. Gorbunov.
The aircraft remained airborne for 37 minutes, operating at an altitude of 1,500 metres, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media sources.
The extensive modernization program equipped the Tu‑22M3M with an advanced suite of digital onboard electronic systems, all developed on a domestic component base. The upgrades include state-of-the-art navigation and communication systems, targeting equipment, engine management and fuel automation systems, as well as an integrated electronic warfare suite.
The replacement of approximately 80% of the aircraft’s onboard electronic equipment has significantly enhanced navigation accuracy, improved automation in flight operations, and simplified both technical maintenance and pre-flight preparation. A notable feature of the modernization is the standardization of the Tu‑22M3M’s electronic systems with those installed on the Tu‑160M strategic bomber.
