Russia defends its right to supply weapons to Iran, cites US arms to Ukraine
The head of Russia's federal agency Rossotrudnichestvo, Yevgeny Primakov, has stated that Russia has full rights to supply weapons to Iran.
He made the statement via video link during a roundtable at the Russian House in Yerevan, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
Primakov recalled the existence of an agreement between Russia and Iran on a strategic partnership. The document does not provide for direct military cooperation; however, given that the U.S. supplied weapons to Ukraine, Russia has the right to transfer arms to Tehran.
He noted that the current military operation against Iran calls into question the value of U.S.-mediated negotiations and may cast doubt on the effectiveness of the American role in conflict resolution, including the Ukrainian crisis.
Additionally, Primakov considers U.S. and Israeli hopes for internal destabilisation in Iran to be unfounded. According to him, the republic possesses sufficient internal stability, which he observed during his recent visit to the country.
