Russia invests $40 million in Armenian development projects Through UN programs

17 September 2024 12:26

Russia has committed approximately $40 million to support various United Nations (UN) programs in Armenia, aiming to bolster both social services and economic development within the country, a statement by the Russian Embassy said.

The financial aid encompasses several key initiatives. Notably, the Russian Federation is channeling $9.7 million through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to enhance local development efforts, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

Additionally, since 2020, $3 million has been allocated to the UNDP-UNICEF project designed to improve basic services for people with disabilities. This initiative, titled "Strengthening the Service Sector for Equitable Participation and Inclusive Development in Armenia," focuses on increasing accessibility and inclusion for disabled individuals.

The World Food Program (WFP) has also received substantial support from Russia. The ongoing "Development of Sustainable School Feeding" project, which began in 2010, has a budget exceeding $25 million. This project aims to establish a sustainable system for providing hot meals in secondary schools, with a long-term goal of transferring the initiative to the Armenian government.

In addition, the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is receiving $2.2 million for its project titled "Improving competitiveness of export-oriented industries in Armenia through modernization and market access."

This initiative, which runs from January 2020 to January 2024, is focused on modernizing Armenian industries and improving their market access.
