Russia, Iran on the brink of signing landmark cooperation agreement
A revised and comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between Russia and Iran is set to be signed soon, as announced by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Lavrov stated that the treaty would reaffirm both parties' commitment to enhanced cooperation in defence and their collaboration aimed at promoting peace and security on both regional and global scales, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
He described the forthcoming agreement as a significant factor in bolstering Russian-Iranian relations.
The Iranian ambassador previously indicated that the document could be ready for signing during the BRICS summit in Kazan. However, it was agreed by the presidents of both countries that the signing would occur after the summit during a subsequent visit by the Iranian leader to Russia.
“The comprehensive cooperation agreement will be signed following the BRICS summit during Pezeshkian's trip to Moscow,” the ambassador confirmed.
While Iranian media suggested that the new Russia-Iran pact could represent a historic turning point in bilateral relations, they also emphasized the significance of discussions held between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian in Ashgabat in October.
These talks were reported to be crucial, with expectations that the future agreement would pave the way for new opportunities across various sectors, including energy, transport, industry, agriculture, science and technology, and defence cooperation.
Earlier in September, President Putin highlighted that Russia would continue to strengthen its partnerships with foreign nations while enhancing its global standing. He noted that the leadership aims to deepen ties between the Russian Far East and other regions of Russia with foreign partners, particularly those interested in reliable, long-term, mutually beneficial cooperation.
