Russia may resume power supplies to Europe
Russia may resume power supplies to EU countries, including Finland and the Baltic states.
The statement came from the power system dispatcher "System Operator", which is based on the Russian power export monopolist Inter RAO's data, Kommersant reports.
According to the forecast, Russia can supply up to 4 billion kWh to Finland in 2023. Some 2.4 billion kWh can be sent to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Thus, the volume of Russian power supplies to the EU countries may reach 6.4 billion kWh this year. This represents almost half of all Russian power sales in 2023.
Inter RAO did not rule out the restoration of supplies to Finland and the Baltic States in the medium term.
These countries have traditionally been the largest export destinations of Russian electricity. In 2021, Inter RAO sent 12.9 billion kWh there – 60 per cent of all electricity supplies from the Russian Federation. According to the newspaper's calculations, in January-May 2022, Russia supplied up to 5 billion kWh to the EU countries.
Analysts interviewed by the newspaper doubt the resumption of deliveries. They noted that this does not correlate with the statements of representatives of the European authorities and energy companies.
Russia suspended power supplies to EU countries in the spring of 2022 amid sanctions.
