Minister: Türkiye plans major boost in electricity exports to Syria

15 August 2025 14:46

Türkiye intends to increase its electricity exports to Syria from the current 281 megawatts to 360 megawatts in the coming weeks, according to Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar.

Bayraktar said the current supply flows through eight separate interconnection points, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

“Our target is to raise this volume to 360 MW in the coming months. Ultimately, we aim to export an additional 500 MW to Syria by expanding the capacity of the power line running from Birecik, in western Şanlıurfa province, to Aleppo,” he stated.

The minister noted that some preparatory work still needs to be completed in Syria to link the new capacity. “By the first quarter of next year, we expect to directly export around 900 MW of electricity to Syria,” Bayraktar added.

Turning to natural gas supplies, Bayraktar recalled that deliveries of Azerbaijani gas to Syria via Türkiye began on August 2. At present, Syria receives 3.4 million cubic meters of gas per day.

“The pipeline’s daily capacity is about 6 million cubic meters, and we are working to reach that level. Once achieved, this will allow the generation of roughly 1,200 MW of electricity in Aleppo and Homs, enough to supply about 5 million households in Syria,” he explained.

Bayraktar also underlined the importance of improving and investing in Syria’s oil infrastructure.

“We believe that with our involvement, along with the participation of international oil companies, this goal is attainable. This will help ensure the Syrian population’s sustainable access to electricity and essential infrastructure,” he said.
