Iran welcomes Armenia-Azerbaijan peace accord as “significant event”
Iran has welcomed the recent agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan reached in Washington, describing it as “a significant event after many years of conflict and mistrust.”
The statement was made by Iranian government representative Fatemeh Mohajerani, according to Iranian media.
Mohajerani emphasised that the Islamic Republic supports any process that contributes to ending clashes, reducing tensions, and fostering lasting stability in the region. However, she underlined that Iran’s support is “conditional and based on principles agreed upon by the countries of the region.”
She outlined Tehran’s three core principles: respect for the full sovereignty of states over their territories, protection of territorial integrity, and opposition to any alterations of international borders. Mohajerani noted that these principles were reflected in the latest joint statement signed by Baku and Yerevan.
On August 8, 2025, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, in the presence of US President Donald J. Trump, reached an initial peace agreement at a summit in Washington. The two leaders endorsed a joint declaration that set out a seven-point framework emphasising sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the renunciation of force.
During the summit, the foreign ministers of both countries initialled a draft “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Inter-State Relations” in the presence of Trump, Aliyev, and Pashinyan. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio hailed the development as a “historic advance towards lasting peace.”
One of the central elements of the agreement is the creation of the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP), also referred to as the Zangezur Corridor, a transit link through Armenia connecting mainland Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave.
