Super-powerful cyberattacks hit Russian companies hard
In January 2026, Russian companies faced an unprecedented wave of DDoS attacks, with the power of some exceeding 2 Tbps and approaching 3 Tbps, the press service of StormWall told Gazeta.Ru.
Just a year ago, such incidents were considered isolated global records, but the situation has now changed radically. According to network threat monitoring, all top 10 largest attacks in the first month of the year exceeded 2 Tbps, signalling the emergence of a new norm for the domestic market.
Telecom companies bore the brunt of the attacks, accounting for nine of the ten most powerful incidents. In addition to telecom operators, financial organisations—including banks and payment systems—as well as retailers, marketplaces, and entertainment companies were hit by record-intensity attacks.
The consequences were severe: some organisations experienced disruptions in online services, websites became completely unavailable, and IT infrastructure failures led to business downtime and significant financial losses.
“We warned that 2026 would mark a critical period when the DDoS industry would fully industrialize. This prediction is coming true faster than expected. Attackers no longer spare resources—they have access to extremely powerful botnets capable of generating traffic comparable to the load on entire country backbones,” said Ramil Khantimirov, CEO and co-founder of StormWall.
