Turkish, Russian foreign ministers discuss Ukraine and Alaska summit
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a phone call with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov to discuss the conflict in Ukraine.
The ministers exchanged views on efforts toward a settlement, including the recent U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.
Later, Russia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the conversation, stating that Lavrov and Fidan had discussed the high-level U.S.-Russian meeting held on August 15.
The ministry added that the call took place at the initiative of the Turkish side. “The schedule of upcoming bilateral contacts was also discussed,” it said.
On August 15, U.S. President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, to discuss ending the Russia-Ukraine war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The nearly three-hour summit, described as a “feel-out meeting” by Trump, aimed to secure a ceasefire and pave the way for peace negotiations. No immediate agreement was reached, but Trump called the talks “extremely productive,” noting agreement on “many points,” while Putin hinted at an unspecified “agreement” that could lead to peace.
