Armenia welcomes Azerbaijan’s move to lift transit restrictions
Armenia has welcomed Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s announcement that Baku has lifted all restrictions on the transit of goods to Armenia — measures that had been in place since the period of occupation.
According to Caliber.Az, Nazeli Baghdasaryan, spokesperson for Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, commented on the development in a post on Facebook, saying the decision was an important step towards strengthening regional ties.
“The Republic of Armenia welcomes the statement by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the removal of restrictions on the transit of goods towards Armenia,” Baghdasaryan wrote.
“This move is of great significance for the opening of regional communications, the strengthening of mutual trust, and the institutionalisation of the peace established between Armenia and Azerbaijan — in line with the agreements reached in Washington,” she added.
President Ilham Aliyev announced the development during a joint press statement with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
“Azerbaijan has lifted all restrictions on the transit of goods to Armenia that had been in place since the occupation," he said.
“I should also note that the first such transit shipment was a consignment of Kazakh grain to Armenia. I believe this is a clear indication that peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia exists not only on paper but also in practice,” Aliyev emphasised.
