Iran assured by Armenia: No US troops in South Caucasus deal
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has addressed growing speculation surrounding the United States’ involvement in a recent agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which was brokered with the participation of US President Donald Trump.
While the full scope of the deal remains unclear, Araghchi emphasized that senior Armenian officials have provided assurances that Iran’s red lines will be fully respected, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.
Araghchi noted that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had recently spoken directly with Iran’s President. In addition, Armenia’s Foreign Minister held a phone conversation with Araghchi, and the Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister conducted a diplomatic visit to Tehran in recent days. These engagements, he said, were intended to clarify the nature of the agreement and allay Iranian concerns.
According to the Armenian side, Araghchi explained, a US engineering company—though registered under Armenian law—will undertake the construction of a road in the region. Crucially, he stressed, “no American military forces will be stationed there,” and all security arrangements will be managed by Armenia itself. “We will maintain our own vigilance,” Araghchi added, underscoring Iran’s intent to monitor developments closely to safeguard its national interests.
