Tokayev pushes for Eurasian logistics hub as Kazakhstan takes EAEU chairmanship
Kazakhstan officially assumed the chairmanship of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) on January 1, 2026.
In an address to the union’s leaders, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev outlined key priorities for the upcoming year, emphasizing the need to strengthen integration and transform the EAEU into a central logistics hub for Eurasia, Caliber.Az reports, citing Akorda.
Reflecting on the past year, Tokayev noted that 2025 marked an anniversary for the EAEU, with member states demonstrating positive economic dynamics. Looking ahead, Kazakhstan plans to launch the “Eurasian Economic Path” initiative, covering 2026–2030, with a long-term vision extending to 2045.
During its chairmanship, Kazakhstan aims to focus on several strategic areas, including the adoption of artificial intelligence, development of transport and logistics infrastructure, digitalization of industry and agriculture, and the promotion of barrier-free trade.
“The world has entered a new historical era that presents unprecedented opportunities but also new challenges, including growing technological inequality. Our task is to harness new technologies for the benefit of our peoples and make them a key driver of Eurasian economic integration,” Tokayev said.
The president proposed signing a joint statement on the responsible development of AI at the Eurasian Economic Forum in Astana later in 2026. He also called for the creation of an integrated AI-based freight management system to reduce delivery times and boost the competitiveness of Eurasian transport corridors.
Tokayev stressed the importance of removing artificial barriers that hinder trade and industrial development, cautioning that customs and regulatory measures should not be used as tools of pressure.
The president highlighted the EAEU’s efforts to expand cooperation with external partners. In 2025, the union signed free trade agreements with Mongolia and Indonesia and an economic partnership agreement with the UAE. Plans are underway to deepen relations with countries in the Global South, Southeast Asia, Africa, and other regional blocs.
