Georgian MP: Radical opposition seeks power without elections
The radical opposition in Georgia has no real chance in the upcoming local elections and has failed to unite behind a single candidate to challenge the ruling Georgian Dream party, a parliamentary majority member said.
According to Georgian media, cited by Caliber.Az, David Matikashvili stated that the opposition’s efforts are driven more by hostility than by any constructive political program.
Local elections, in which mayors and deputies of local consultative bodies (sakrebulo) will be chosen, are scheduled for October 4, 2025.
“The radicals have no chance in the local elections; they couldn’t even agree on a single candidate. The only thing that unites them is their hatred for the country,” Matikashvili said.
He added that since 2012, the National Movement has repeatedly attempted to insert itself into illegitimate processes to seize power without elections.
“All this has been completely impossible until now, and it will remain so today and in the future. They have no chance of opposing the Georgian people when they express their will,” Matikashvili noted, citing the 2024 parliamentary elections as a clear example, when the opposition failed to influence public choice despite outside assistance.
