Russia's Zakharova urges US to overcome democratic crisis before seeking global adventures
In light of the upcoming US presidential election, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed her hope that the American people can overcome their democratic crisis.
She emphasized the importance of the US leadership focusing on domestic issues rather than seeking “adventures on the other side of the world”, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
“It would be logical for whoever occupies the White House to prioritize resolving the challenges facing their own country rather than pursuing initiatives tens of thousands of miles away,” Zakharova remarked. She added that Moscow is prepared to consider Washington's proposals if there are shifts in U.S. policy following the election.
As the United States holds its 60th presidential election today, November 5, 2024, voters will choose between former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, and current Vice President Kamala Harris, who has stepped in for the withdrawing Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee.
In a traditional early voting result from the township of Disquill Notch in New Hampshire, both Harris and Trump received three votes at the very first polling station to close after midnight local time. This polling station has a history of making headlines, with Joe Biden securing a victory there four years ago.
Kamala Harris, the first woman and the first Black politician to serve as U.S. Vice President, previously held the role of Attorney General in California and represented the state in the Senate. Initially not a candidate, she was nominated by Democrats following Biden's decision to withdraw from the race. Harris is running alongside Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice-presidential pick.
On the Republican side, Donald Trump, who previously served as the 45th President of the United States and has an estimated fortune of $5.6 billion, is back in the race. Trump, who won the 2016 election against Hillary Clinton but lost to Biden in 2020, has selected Ohio Senator James David Vance as his running mate.
