Russian ambassador urges citizens to leave Israel via Egypt
The Russian Ambassador to Israel, Anatoly Viktorov, has recommended that Russian nationals in Israel consider leaving the country through Egypt amid ongoing security concerns.
According to the ambassador, several dozen Russian citizens have already used this route to evacuate, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
Speaking on the Russian television channel, Viktorov outlined the practicalities of this option. He explained that a border crossing near the southern Israeli city of Eilat, on the frontier with Egypt, remains open 24 hours a day.
Russian nationals can cross into Egypt without a visa using valid Russian identification documents. From there, travellers can proceed to Sharm El-Sheikh or Cairo and take flights operated by Aeroflot or other airlines to return to Russia.
The ambassador also mentioned a land border crossing between Israel and Jordan. However, he noted that Jordanian airspace is currently closed, and flights from the kingdom are frequently cancelled, limiting evacuation options via that route.
Viktorov described the situation in Israel as “tense,” acknowledging risks to the safety of diplomats and Russian citizens in the country. He advised all Russian nationals present in Israel to consider departing until the situation stabilises.
The embassy is monitoring developments closely and stated it remains prepared to take further action if necessary. Viktorov emphasised that those wishing to ensure their safety currently have viable means to leave the country.
