SBU says Russian-recruited agent detained over Odesa car blast photo
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), together with the National Police of Ukraine, has detained an agent of Russian special services “in hot pursuit” following a terrorist attack carried out in Odesa on February 16, 2026.
The suspect assembled an improvised explosive device and planted it beneath a vehicle parked near an apartment building.
According to the SBU, the explosive device was placed under an SUV. The blast injured the vehicle’s owner — a 56-year-old former colonel of the Ukrainian Armed Forces — who was nearby at the time of the explosion. Law enforcement officers apprehended the suspect within 24 hours.
Investigators determined that the detained 33-year-old man had been recruited by Russian special services after searching for “easy money” through Telegram channels. He reportedly received instructions from handlers on how to assemble an improvised explosive device using readily available materials, purchasing some components from hardware stores.
After building the device, the suspect conducted reconnaissance at the attack site, planted the bomb under the vehicle, and installed a disguised smartphone to enable remote detonation. Using the device, Russian handlers monitored the situation around the target and carried out the explosion remotely.
During searches at the suspect’s residence, officers seized materials used to manufacture explosive devices as well as smartphones through which he maintained contact with his Russian handler.
The detainee has been formally charged under the article “terrorist act.” He faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property and is currently being held in custody.
