Serbian leader hails friendship with Azerbaijani president, urges regional cooperation
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić pointed out his personal friendship with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev while addressing a panel discussion at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos.
Vučić reflected on the growing importance of smaller nations such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Serbia in global affairs, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
“I am convinced that in the future our significance will increase. Armenia has about 3 million people, Serbia has 7 million, and Azerbaijan has 10 million. We will have to get along with each other, cooperate and do things together. Because in today's world, where we are facing novels, novel relations where ‘the big fish eats the smaller fish’, and this is openly acknowledged,” he said.
The Serbian president emphasized the necessity of cooperation and collective action among these nations. He framed the choice facing smaller states in today’s turbulent geopolitical environment: either joining larger blocs or safeguarding national sovereignty and independence. According to Vučić, the peoples of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Serbia will choose the latter path, preserving their national interests while remaining open to partnerships and collaboration.
Vučić concluded that cooperation and mutual understanding were essential for small but significant countries in a world where power dynamics often favored the largest actors, emphasizing the strategic importance of regional solidarity and pragmatic diplomacy.
