Spokesperson: Russia prioritizes security of citizens, diplomatic, military sites in Syria
Russia is closely monitoring developments in Syria, with the protection of Russian diplomatic and military sites being a top priority, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.
At a briefing, Zakharova stressed that ensuring the safety of all Russian citizens in Syria and the protection of Russian diplomatic, military, and other facilities, including those related to Russian companies, remains a top priority, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
She stressed that Russia operates based on the absolute necessity of adhering to international legal norms that regulate the status and activities of Russian institutions in Syria, including the Vienna Conventions.
Zakharova also urged Russian citizens in Syria to avoid areas with large gatherings and to exercise the highest level of caution.
"Our diplomatic mission in Damascus continues to operate, but it is working under conditions of extremely high security threats," she remarked.
According to Zakharova, Syria is currently "entering a transitional period in which the country will inevitably face new challenges, which are unfolding literally in real time."
"We express our solidarity with the Syrian people, with whom Russia has historically maintained friendly relations," stressed Zakharova.
The diplomat expressed sincere wishes for the Syrian people to successfully overcome the emerging challenges, difficulties, and problems.
"We advocate for the swift establishment of an inclusive political process, which should be carried out by the Syrians themselves on a platform of broad national dialogue, in accordance with the UN Security Council resolution."
