Strengthening NATO: US greenlights major missile sale to Denmark
The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has announced the approval of a potential sale involving 203 AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) for the Royal Danish Air Force (RDAF) to equip its F-16 Viper and F-35 Lightning II fighter jets.
The estimated value of this transaction is approximately $744 million, with RTX Corporation, based in Tucson, Arizona, designated as the primary contractor responsible for the production and delivery, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
According to the DSCA statement, “The Danish government has requested the purchase of up to 203 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAMs and up to 9 guidance sections.” The potential sale will encompass not only the missiles but also various support items, including spare parts, support equipment, software, and logistics and weapons repair services.
Denmark's formal request includes up to 203 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM missiles and essential support infrastructure, featuring nine advanced guidance sections that enhance targeting precision through an integrated security module.
This arms deal is strategically significant for U.S. national security and foreign policy, as it strengthens the defence capabilities of Denmark, a vital NATO ally. The new missiles are expected to enhance Denmark’s ability to safeguard NATO and allied territories without upsetting the existing regional military balance.
Denmark already employs AMRAAM missiles, which should facilitate a seamless integration of the new units. Notably, this agreement does not necessitate the deployment of additional U.S. personnel to Denmark and will not impact U.S. defence readiness.
The AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM is recognized as one of the most advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles designed to secure air superiority. It boasts enhanced penetration capabilities and exceptional manoeuvrability, utilizing an advanced active radar seeker in conjunction with GPS-supported inertial navigation.
This combination provides the missile with a “fire-and-forget” capability, allowing pilots to lock onto targets, launch, and immediately redirect their attention to emerging threats. The AIM-120D-3 is the latest and most sophisticated model in the AMRAAM series, featuring upgraded systems that facilitate precise long-range targeting and advanced electronic countermeasures.
Powered by a solid-fuel rocket motor, the AIM-120D-3 achieves high speeds and an extended operational range, with capabilities exceeding Mach 4. While its exact range remains classified, it is estimated to cover approximately 100 to 112 miles (160 to 180 kilometres), depending on launch conditions and position.
Furthermore, the D-3 model is optimized for reduced radar visibility, featuring specialized designs and geometries that complicate detection by enemy radar systems.
