Student injures classmate in Russia's Chelyabinsk school attack
A violent incident at a school in Chelyabinsk left several people injured after a ninth-grade student brought multiple weapons to class and used them during a lesson, according to regional authorities, cited by Russian media.
The episode took place at School No. 32 in the city’s Central District. Officials said the student arrived with a plastic crossbow, a gas spray canister, and a signal pistol. During the lesson, he first discharged the gas spray toward two teachers, causing chemical burns to their mucous membranes. He then fired the signal pistol and used the crossbow.
A female classmate sustained a head injury. Authorities noted that accounts differ as to whether the injury was caused by the pistol shot or by a crossbow bolt.
Following the attack, the student jumped from a fourth-floor window and suffered severe injuries, including fractures to both legs.
All those injured were taken to a regional children’s hospital. The girl remains in moderate condition, while the teachers received medical assistance at the scene.
The school was evacuated immediately after the incident, and law enforcement officers and psychologists were deployed. On the orders of the regional governor, a special commission from the education ministry was sent to the school to assess the situation.
Investigators have opened three criminal cases, including charges related to attempted murder of two or more persons, negligence, and providing services that do not meet safety requirements, according to the regional branch of the Investigative Committee.
