Swiss FM expects ceasefire to be achieved in Ukraine conflict
Head of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Ignazio Cassis has expressed confidence that a ceasefire will be established during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking in an interview, Cassis outlined his belief that the most likely scenario for the future of the conflict will involve a process aimed at achieving a ceasefire, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Cassis further commented on the proposal for both sides in the conflict to refrain from targeting energy infrastructure. He emphasized that the Swiss government fully supports all efforts toward a ceasefire and peace, viewing such initiatives as the right path forward for resolving the crisis.
When asked about the possible future trajectory of the conflict, Cassis shared his opinion that the situation could either freeze or escalate, depending on the evolving dynamics. However, he dismissed the idea of the conflict extending beyond Ukraine's borders to NATO countries, calling it "unrealistic at this point."
He further warned that such an escalation would likely lead to the use of nuclear weapons, a scenario he described as deeply concerning.
On March 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a phone talk in which they discussed the situation in Ukraine, conditions for preventing escalation, and several other international issues. Putin agreed with the US leader's proposal for a 30-day mutual halt in attacks on energy infrastructure by both sides in the Ukraine conflict. According to a statement from the White House, both leaders agreed that a lasting peace is necessary for Ukraine.
