Syria refuses Washington’s call for force against Hezbollah in Lebanon
Syrian authorities have rejected a US proposal to use force against the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah, according to Syrian presidential adviser Ahmad Zidan, as reported by The National.
“The United States proposed that the Syrian state become involved in Lebanon. We in the Syrian state are not concerned with any military intervention [in Lebanon]. Some international actors may have a military approach, but military approaches have proven unsuccessful in the region,” Zidan said.
He added that Damascus supports efforts by the Lebanese government to strengthen state institutions, but opposes external military intervention.
The report also noted that a possible visit by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to Washington had been discussed, during which Syria’s potential role in Lebanon could have been addressed. However, US officials later stated that such a visit is not currently on the agenda.
Earlier reports suggested that Washington was considering involving Syria in efforts to address the situation in Lebanon, though these claims have not been officially confirmed.
