Syria, Russia negotiating maintaining two military bases
Syria is in negotiations with Russia regarding the continued presence of two Russian military bases on Syrian territory.
During the interview, Syria’s new leader Mohammed al-Jolani refrained from discussing Russia's military presence in Syria. However, one of his advisors revealed that talks are ongoing with Moscow concerning the continued operation of two Russian bases in Syria, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Earlier, Press Secretary for the Russian president Dmitry Peskov stated that no final decision has been made yet regarding the Russian military bases in Syria. He added that Moscow continues maintaining contact with representatives of the forces currently controlling the situation in the country, and that the issue will be determined through ongoing dialogue.
The US special forces had taken control of former Russian military bases in Syria following the withdrawal of Russian units. The US troops were spotted in the Kurdish city of Kobani, located in northern Syria. The US forces took control of a former Russian base after the withdrawal of Russian units.
Following this, US special forces also seized former Russian military positions in the towns of Sarrin and Ain Issa, after Russian troops were redeployed to the Hmeimim airbase and the port of Tartus. Earlier, commander of Syrian armed factions, Ahmed al-Sharaa (Mohammed al-Jolani), stated that Russia has been given an opportunity to reassess and reconsider its relationship with the Syrians.
