Syria's new leader pledges future free from Iranian influence, regional attacks
The leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), Ahmed al-Sharaa, has stated that the Syrian revolution has effectively set back the Iranian project in the region by 40 years.
In an exclusive interview with Syrian media, al-Sharaa emphasized that Syria, under his leadership, will not become a platform for attacks on any Arab or Gulf country, Caliber.Az reports.
"The Syrian revolution ended with the fall of the Assad regime, and we will not allow it to be exported elsewhere," al-Sharaa declared. He highlighted that the HTS had achieved significant results with minimal damage, particularly in curbing Iran's influence in the region.
Al-Sharaa also expressed a desire for Syria to reach a level of development similar to that of the Gulf countries. "Saudi Arabia has built very bold plans and has a vision of development, which we are also looking forward to," he said. "There is no doubt that there are many points of overlap, whether in terms of economic cooperation or development cooperation."
Starting on November 27, 2024, an alliance of armed opposition forces in the Idlib governorate launched a series of operations against the Syrian regime.
The regime of Bashar al-Assad was overthrown on December 8 after just 11 days of intense conflict, with opposition forces declaring victory as they entered Damascus. The Assad government negotiated its surrender, having failed to address the widespread instability affecting its citizens.
