Syrian security forces kill ISIS cell leader after deadly Raqqa attacks
Syrian Internal Security Forces have killed the leader of an ISIS cell in a targeted operation in Raqqa, following a series of recent attacks on local security checkpoints, officials said.
Colonel Rami al-Taha, commander of Internal Security in Raqqa Province, said the operation was launched after two attacks over the past two days left four security personnel dead and several others injured, Caliber.Az reports via Syrian media.
Using intelligence gathered through intensive surveillance, specialised units conducted coordinated strikes at dawn, targeting those responsible.
“The operations resulted in the neutralisation of the terrorist cell leader and one operative, and the arrest of four additional members,” Colonel al-Taha said in a statement published by the Ministry of Interior. Authorities also confiscated weapons and ammunition from the suspects.
He added that sweeping operations are continuing across the province, with reinforced security at checkpoints and centres aimed at preventing further attacks.
“These measures are critical to protecting the safety of citizens and maintaining national stability,” the Colonel said, vowing to pursue anyone threatening Syria’s security or sovereignty.
The announcement comes after Monday’s (February 23) failed ISIS assault on a checkpoint west of Raqqa, which security forces successfully repelled.
