Tanzania president nominates new prime minister amid post-election tensions
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan nominated former finance minister Mwigulu Nchemba as the country’s new prime minister on November 13, following last month’s disputed election.
Parliament is widely expected to approve Nchemba’s appointment later on November 13, as Hassan secured a landslide victory in the October 29 vote, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
The election has been marred by controversy, with opposition parties alleging vote rigging and violent protests erupting over the exclusion of Hassan’s main challengers.
The U.N. Human Rights Office has reported that hundreds of people may have died in the unrest, while opposition figures and human rights activists claim the toll exceeds 1,000. The government has dismissed the higher estimates but has not released its own official figure.
Hassan, who has been in office since 2021, defended the integrity of the election and rejected criticism over her human rights record.
