Tesla leads Norway’s near-total EV market in August
Tesla accounted for more than one-fifth of all new car sales in Norway in August, as electric vehicles made up a staggering 97% of new passenger registrations, according to the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV).
Driven by strong demand for the Model Y and Model 3, Tesla captured nearly 22% of the market in August. Volkswagen followed with around 13%, while Chinese manufacturer BYD more than tripled its sales compared to a year earlier. In contrast, Toyota and Volvo recorded significantly weaker sales than in August 2024, according to Bloomberg.
Norway became the first country where electric vehicles outsold fossil-fuel models back in 2020, thanks to generous incentives such as reduced road tolls and exemptions or cuts to value-added tax. The country now offers buyers a choice of roughly 170 electric-powered models, drawing global manufacturers eager to secure a share of the market.
“It will be interesting to see how this develops in relation to the classic brands that Norwegians have traditionally chosen,” OFV head Øyvind Solberg Thorsen said on September 1.
