Three earthquakes strike Balıkesir in quick succession

13 November 2025 09:22

Three consecutive earthquakes hit Balıkesir on the morning of 13 November.

Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced in a post on its X account that the first quake struck at 07:16 with a magnitude of 4.7, followed by two more at 07:20 and 07:21, each measuring 4.2, in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir, Caliber.Az reports.

The earthquakes occurred at depths ranging from 7 to 12.31 kilometers.

In recent months, Türkiye’s northwestern Balıkesir province has been shaken by a series of earthquakes, leaving several people injured and causing structural damage.

The first tremor was recorded on September 22, 2025, at 12:02 p.m. local time with a magnitude of 4.5. AFAD reported that its epicentre was in the Sındırgı district and that the quake struck at a depth of 7 kilometres.

A stronger quake followed on October 28, 2025, at 22:48 local time, again centred in Sındırgı. Occurring at a depth of 5.99 kilometres, the tremor triggered panic among residents and left 22 people injured after they jumped from balconies. Four of them were later discharged, Governor İsmail Ustaoğlu said.

At least three buildings previously weakened by earlier tremors collapsed, though no deaths or people trapped under debris were reported.

The sequence continued on November 2, 2025, when a magnitude 4.3 quake struck the province at 15:41 local time. AFAD said the epicentre was once again in Sındırgı, this time at a depth of 14.13 kilometres.

The latest incident occurred when a magnitude 4.9 earthquake shook the region at 16:35 local time, also centred in Sındırgı. AFAD reported that the tremor, which struck at a depth of 11.02 kilometres, was felt across parts of northwestern Türkiye.

The recurring tremors underscore the persistent seismic activity in Balıkesir, heightening concerns over the region’s structural resilience.
