Tropical storm Monta approaches India as alerts issued
Tropical storm Monta, with wind gusts expected to reach 90–100 km/h, is set to make landfall on India’s coast late Tuesday evening, October 28.
The storm is expected to hit near the city of Kakinada in the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh, where wind speeds could reach up to 110 km/h, Caliber.Az reports, citing Indian media.
At least 183 train services have been affected by Monta’s approach, with several flights also cancelled. The state is preparing for heavy rainfall and powerful winds.
Authorities are warning that falling trees and power lines could cause disruptions to electricity and communication networks.
The Andhra Pradesh government has placed the districts of Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Eluru and East Godavari on high alert.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has instructed officials to prevent any cyclone-related casualties.
Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar said 269 rehabilitation centres have been established with full facilities.
While Andhra Pradesh is expected to bear the brunt of the storm, neighbouring Odisha and Tamil Nadu are also likely to experience strong winds and heavy rainfall.
Odisha authorities said 3,000 people have been evacuated from vulnerable areas as the storm triggered rain across Bhubaneswar and the southern parts of the state.
