Trump calls on Syrian leader to embrace Abraham Accords
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has announced that US President Donald Trump urged Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa to join the Abraham Accords during a meeting held in Riyadh.
In a virtual summit that included the leaders of the US, Syria, and Türkiye, President Trump emphasised the potential benefits of Syria’s participation in the historic agreement with Israel, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
He outlined that such a move could play a significant role in expelling foreign militants and Palestinian radicals from Syrian soil, while also supporting US efforts to prevent the resurgence of ISIS.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who also participated in the meeting, expressed his gratitude to Trump for lifting US sanctions on Damascus. Erdoğan additionally voiced his country’s readiness to collaborate with both the US and Saudi Arabia to strengthen regional peace and prosperity. The Abraham Accords, signed in 2020, marked a groundbreaking agreement aimed at normalising diplomatic relations between Israel, Bahrain, and the UAE, with US mediation.
The accord, named after the patriarch Abraham, has fostered closer economic and defence cooperation among the participating countries. The agreement holds significance across the Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, with leaders hoping it could spark broader peace efforts in the Middle East.
