Trump: Iran agrees to full renunciation of nuclear weapons
US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that negotiations with Iran are progressing slowly, while also claiming that Tehran has consented in principle to abandon any pursuit of nuclear weapons as part of the ongoing diplomatic discussions.
“We are getting where we want slowly,” the US leader said in an interview with Fox News, attributing the delay to the complex nature of Iranian negotiators.
Trump said the United States is gradually approaching a deal with Iran that would satisfy Washington. At the same time, he said he is in no rush to reach an agreement and again threatened to resume military action against Iran if no deal is reached.
The American leader stressed that he is not in a hurry, noting that although he would prefer to speed things up due to the potential for lower gasoline prices, rushing would prevent achieving a good deal.
Trump also stated that Iran has agreed not only to refrain from developing nuclear weapons but also from acquiring them. According to him, the new draft agreement includes a commitment that Iran will not seek to purchase nuclear arms.
The president said he personally insisted on including this clause, making it a full rejection by Tehran of any form of nuclear weapons acquisition.
On May 29, the Tasnim news agency reported that the draft agreement between Iran and the United States had been revised in recent days and had not yet been finalized.
