Trump reaffirms desire to acquire Greenland With consent of residents

10 March 2025 12:13

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland, but stressed that the move would only be pursued if the island’s residents are in agreement.

In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, the President revisited his earlier statements about the potential acquisition, making it clear that the consent of the people of Greenland would be pivotal, Caliber.Az reports.

"As I made clear during my Joint Address to Congress, the United States strongly supports the people of Greenland’s right to determine their own future," Trump wrote.

He further emphasised the United States' commitment to the safety and prosperity of Greenland's inhabitants. "We will continue to KEEP YOU SAFE, as we have since World War II," Trump added.

Trump also highlighted the financial investments the US would make in Greenland, should the people choose to join the US. "We are ready to INVEST BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to create new jobs and MAKE YOU RICH," he stated.

Moreover, the President extended a welcoming offer, stressing that if the people of Greenland wish to become part of the United States, they would be welcomed with open arms.

"And, if you so choose, we welcome you to be a part of the Greatest Nation anywhere in the World, the United States of America!" Trump concluded.

Notably, Greenland, the world's largest island, is sparsely populated, with around 56,000 inhabitants, primarily indigenous Inuit people. While the island’s economy relies heavily on fishing, it has become increasingly attractive due to its rich natural resources, including rare earth minerals, uranium, and iron. As global warming melts parts of its ice, these resources may become more accessible, making the region even more valuable to global powers.

Greenland has been part of the Kingdom of Denmark for nearly 300 years. In 1979, a referendum granted it home rule, allowing control over most local policies, although Denmark retains authority over foreign affairs and defence.

Trump’s comments have sparked strong opposition from locals. Kuno Fencker, a member of the Greenlandic parliament, dismissed the notion as a threat, suggesting that an independent Greenland could still cooperate with the US on defence. However, many Greenlanders have voiced their displeasure. Dines Mikaelsen, a tour operator from Tasiilaq, called the idea “very dangerous,” while Aleqa Hammond, the first female prime minister of Greenland, criticised Trump for treating the territory as “a good he can purchase.”
