Trump says Colombia may be next US target after Venezuela “Sounds good to me”
U.S. President Donald Trump has accused Colombian President Gustavo Petro of involvement in drug trafficking and did not rule out carrying out an operation similar to that in Venezuela.
“It sounds good to me," he said, commenting on possible US military action in Colombia, Caliber.Az reports via the BBC.
"Colombia is very sick, too, run by a sick man, who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States, and he's not going to be doing it very long," Trump told reporters travelling with the presidential pool.
Nicolás Maduro, leader of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, has been in power since 2013. His tenure has been marked by frequent accusations of repressing opposition groups and silencing dissent, sometimes through the use of violence.
Both domestic opponents and foreign governments widely consider Maduro’s victory in Venezuela’s 2024 election to have been illegitimate.
In a dramatic early-morning special forces operation on January 3, Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured at their compound and flown to the United States. The operation also involved strikes on military bases.
The couple have since been charged with weapons and drug offences and are scheduled to appear in a New York court on January 5.
