Turkish media highlights rebuilding of Khojaly martyrs' cemetery in Azerbaijan's Garabagh
In the liberated Garabagh region of Azerbaijan, authorities have completed the restoration of a cemetery commemorating the victims of the 1992 Khojaly massacre, in which Armenian forces killed hundreds of Azerbaijani civilians.
The Turkish newspaper Sabah, reporting from Azerbaijan’s Aghdam district, detailed the atrocities that claimed the lives of men, women, children, and the elderly during this tragic event, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
The report notes, “Many of the victims were buried at the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Aghdam. During the Armenian occupation, the site was destroyed—graves desecrated and headstones shattered.” The article further documented cases of desecration, including the destruction of graves in search of gold teeth.
Following Azerbaijan’s victory in the 44-day Patriotic War, comprehensive reconstruction efforts have been launched across the liberated territories. Among these initiatives, the Khojaly Martyrs’ Cemetery has been fully restored. Today, the graves are adorned with the flags of Azerbaijan and Türkiye, honoring those who perished in the atrocities.
Sabah emphasizes that “the restoration and reconstruction of the cemetery in Aghdam district were carried out through the efforts of the Azerbaijani government in coordination with the local administration,” highlighting the commitment to preserving the memory of the victims and revitalizing historically significant sites.
