Türkiye, Cyprus complete feasibility study for laying offshore cable
The project aimed at connecting electricity between Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is technically ready.
Professor Murat Fahrioglu, the coordinator of the electrical engineering and electronics program at the Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) campus in the TRNC, told Anadolu.
"Island grids are very sensitive because they are small and isolated. And in this regard, connection to much larger mainland networks is often required. A large number of islands around the world are already connected to larger networks or will be connected in the near future," the professor said.
He said Turkish company Türkiye Elektrik İletim AŞ and the TRNC Electricity Authority are working on the details of the connection.
"In technical terms, the connection project is already ready. This type of connection is currently the most common type of connection in the world," the professor noted.
According to him, the cable, up to 85 kilometres long, is designed to ensure an uninterrupted power supply to the TRNC.
"We focus on 3 routes close to each other. We take into account different scenarios related to the capacity of the cable. The most difficult part of the project is laying the cable underwater," said Professor.
