Türkiye develops stronger armour for ALTAY tank PHOTO

17 April 2023 17:48

The reactive and composite armour systems of Türkiye’s first national main battle tank ALTAY are being developed and produced by Roketsan Ballistic Protection System.

Although Roketsan has decades of experience in armour systems, its greatest advantage over competitors in this field worldwide is its ability to develop armour systems at the same time as it develops anti-tank missile systems, Caliber.Az cites Defence Turk as saying on Twitter.

Thus, the company, which can create fast and efficient solutions in missile systems, has also succeeded in developing more efficient and lighter armour systems using high-tech materials for the ALTAY project, attaching great importance to innovation.

The ALTAY tank armour system stands out as a next-generation hybrid armour system designed by Roketsan engineers to protect against modern threats. With its high-tech armour materials and advanced subsystems, the system offers a high level of protection with a minimum weight and volume.

The armour system provides highly effective protection for the combat compartment and sub-critical systems thanks to minimised edge angle effects and optimised placement, while at the same time having enhanced resistance to multiple impacts compared to competitors. The system's open architecture also allows it to be updated to meet new threat scenarios.

Roketsan is currently preparing for serial production of the armour systems and plans to deliver a total of 250 sets of armour following the completion of tank trials in the Turkish Armed Forces.

The new-generation technologies used in this armour system, which can be used in all configurations of the ALTAY tank, can also be adapted for other tanks in the Turkish Armed Forces' arsenal. In the future, there are also plans to use armour in unmanned ground vehicles.
