FM Lavrov highlights Armenia’s use of Russian weapons in territorial dispute with Azerbaijan
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has raised a significant point regarding the use of Russian-made weapons in the South Caucasus, specifically addressing Armenia’s military actions during the territorial conflict with Azerbaijan.
Speaking at a press conference in Yerevan following talks with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, Lavrov reminded the Armenian side that Russian weapons were not only used by Azerbaijan, but also by Armenia during its occupation of Azerbaijani territories, Caliber.Az reports per Armenian media.
“Let me remind you that Armenia has used Russian weapons practically throughout its independence, including during the seizure of seven uncontested Azerbaijani districts, to which it has never officially claimed,” Lavrov stated, responding to a question concerning arms deliveries to Baku.
Lavrov further emphasized that none of Armenia’s previous leaders ever proposed recognizing Karabakh as an independent entity. Simultaneously, fortifications designed for long-term occupation were constructed on the captured territories. "Some analysts have suggested that the nature of these fortifications implied an intention to permanently retain control over these lands, with no intention of returning them to Azerbaijan," he added.
The minister also contextualized his comments by pointing out the broader use of Russian weaponry on a global scale, including in various regions like Africa. He underscored that the use of Russian arms in different countries does not necessarily align with the political interests of all parties involved.
"Our weapons are employed in various countries, including in Africa. For instance, the flag of Mozambique features a Kalashnikov assault rifle. However, this does not imply that such weapons are universally used in ways that align with the interests of all parties involved,” he remarked.
