Türkiye launched Operation Euphrates Shield in 2016 to clear ISIL militants from the Turkish-Syrian border and curb Kurdish territorial expansion. This operation, carried out with the Free Syrian Army, successfully captured areas like Jarabulus, Al-Bab, and Dabiq. Subsequent operations, Olive Branch in 2018 and Peace Spring in 2019, also involved clashes with ISIL fighters despite primarily targeting Kurdish forces. Turkish forces have regularly conducted airstrikes and artillery attacks on ISIL positions in Syria and Iraq, especially near the Turkish border.
Türkiye hosts millions of Syrian refugees, providing humanitarian assistance to those fleeing the conflict with ISIL and other militant groups in Syria.
Türkiye's battle against ISIL involves a combination of military operations, intelligence activities, border security measures, internal counter-terrorism efforts, and international cooperation. The fight against ISIL is crucial to Türkiye's broader security and foreign policy strategy.
