Türkiye neutralises one of PKK/YPG terrorist leader in Syria PHOTO

03 February 2025 14:04

Türkiye's National Intelligence Organisation (MİT) has neutralised one of the leaders of the YPG (Syrian wing of the PKK) Mahmut Ağca during an operation in Ain al-Arab (Kobani), northern Syria.

Terrorist Mahmut Ağca, known by the codename "Azad" had been organising attacks in Türkiye since 2015, resulting in the deaths of dozens of Turkish soldiers and police officers. He had been included in MİT’s list of priority targets, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

Ağca, who joined the organisation in 2006, was involved with the YPG's Civil Defense Units until 2015.

That year, he moved to the group's military intelligence division and began orchestrating terrorist attacks in Türkiye from Syrian territory. He facilitated the smuggling of explosives and terrorists from Syria into Türkiye for operations there. Ağca believed he was safe, directing his operatives from a distance. However, despite his attempts to stay out of reach, he could not evade the targeted operation by MİT, which brought an end to his involvement in these deadly activities.

Türkiye's recent operations underscore its steadfast dedication to combating terrorism and bolstering regional security. These measures are part of a strategic effort aimed at disrupting terrorist activities and maintaining stability in the regions. Turkish authorities use the term "neutralise" to describe situations where terrorists either surrender, are killed, or are captured during such operations.

The PKK, recognised as a terrorist organisation by Türkiye, the US and the EU, has led a 40-year campaign of violence against Türkiye, which has claimed more than 40,000 lives, including those of women and children.
