Türkiye promises to open borders with Armenia if Baku-Yerevan peace achieved
Head of the Türkiye–Azerbaijan Interparliamentary Friendship Group Shamil Ayrim has stated, on April 8, that his country will open its borders with Armenia if a lasting peace and settlement are reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Speaking at a joint session of parliamentary working groups from Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the Milli Majlis (Parliament), Ayrim highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation among Turkic states in education, energy, security, and culture, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
“Interparliamentary cooperation between Türkiye and Azerbaijan has strategic significance both regionally and within the broader Turkic world,” Ayrim said.
He added that coordinated actions between Azerbaijan and Türkiye play a crucial role in maintaining regional stability amid tensions between Iran and the United States.
Ayrim also emphasised the strategic importance of Azerbaijan’s role in energy, security, and trade, alongside Türkiye’s position as an energy hub, noting that their significance extends beyond economics to regional security.
He pointed to tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Cyprus issue as factors that further enhance this strategic importance, underlining that sustainable peace in the region requires cooperation.
He also highlighted the support of the presidents of Azerbaijan and Türkiye and stressed the role of interparliamentary friendship structures in fostering collaboration and advancing joint initiatives within the Turkic world.
