Ukraine, Finland align on need for realistic negotiations, sustained pressure on Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke with his Finnish counterpart, Alexander Stubb, as part of Kyiv’s ongoing diplomatic outreach aimed at securing a just and lasting resolution to the war with Russia.
"We updated each other on our contacts with partners and also discussed details of yesterday’s conversation with US President Donald Trump," Caliber.Az quotes Zelenskyy as saying on Telegram.
Zelenskyy also briefed Stubb on his conversation the day before with US President Donald Trump. According to Zelenskyy, coordination among allies remains essential to ensuring that diplomatic efforts are effective and results-oriented.
“Diplomacy for peace must be aligned and focused on real outcomes,” Zelenskyy said.
The Ukrainian president reiterated concerns that Russia is deliberately dragging out the conflict. “It’s clear that Russia is trying to buy time to continue the war and maintain its occupation,” he said, stressing that only sustained international pressure can shift Moscow’s approach.
He highlighted the role of sanctions in curbing Russia’s war efforts, thanking those governments that have taken steps to strengthen the punitive measures. “Sanctions matter,” Zelenskyy noted, “and I am grateful to everyone who is making them more tangible for the perpetrators of this war.”
Looking ahead, Zelenskyy reaffirmed Ukraine’s willingness to engage in meaningful negotiations. “There is no doubt the war must end at the negotiating table,” he said, adding that any such process must be based on clear and realistic proposals. He also warned that if Russia continues to advance with unfeasible demands and obstruct progress, it must face serious consequences.
Further discussions with international partners are expected later on May 20 as Ukraine seeks broader consensus on the next steps towards peace.
