Ukraine, US working on common energy programme
Ukrainian and US energy agencies, jointly with the Net Zero World initiative, are preparing a cooperation programme on carbon-free and sustainable development of the Ukrainian energy sector.
The project programme was discussed with the participation of Ukraine’s Deputy Energy Minister Yaroslav Demchenkov, US Assistant Secretary of Energy for International Affairs Andrew Light, representatives of national laboratories of the US Department of Energy, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Ministry of Infrastructure and Ministry of Environment of Ukraine, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Ukraine Energy Ministry's Facebook post.
The programme will also provide cooperation in the development of electricity transmission systems and the construction in Ukraine of small modular reactors.
"Ukraine seeks wider use of carbon-neutral energy sources. That is why we intend to phase out of coal in electricity production and reduce natural gas consumption by relying solely on our own mining and biogas production,” Demchenkov said.
Ukraine has a huge potential to become the energy hub of Europe.
"With our energy system integrated into ENTSO-E, and expanded energy corridors, with a "green" and low-carbon generation available in Ukraine, branched gas and electrical networks and storage facilities, we are confident that such prospect is real," Demchenkov added.
