Ukrainian leader signals willingness for leader-level talks with Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declared that Kyiv is prepared to hold high-level talks with Moscow to address key issues, emphasising that Ukraine is not afraid of direct negotiations with Russia.
Zelenskyy praised the Ukrainian delegation for conducting the talks in a "respectful and dignified" manner, asserting that all “Russian threats” were firmly rejected during the dialogue, Caliber.Az reports, citing Zelenskyy’s message on Telegram following a briefing on the outcome of recent discussions between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Istanbul.
He reiterated Ukraine’s firm position that a complete and unconditional ceasefire is essential for any meaningful diplomatic progress.
“It must be long-term and extendable,” Zelenskyy said, underlining the importance of stability for negotiations to move forward. “Our proposal, coordinated with our partners, is for a 30-day ceasefire. We are ready for this,” Zelenskyy stated.
“We are also ready for a leader-level meeting to address the most critical issues. Ukraine is not afraid of direct talks with Russia, and it’s important that Russia’s leadership does not prolong the war.”
Zelenskyy also confirmed that Ukrainian officials are working on the logistics of a potential prisoner exchange with Russia, based on a “1,000 for 1,000” swap formula.
As part of Ukraine’s broader diplomatic efforts, the president has ordered the establishment of a permanent, expanded national negotiation team to ensure continued engagement and preparedness for future talks.
