UN to confirm former German FM as General Assembly president in formal vote
The United Nations General Assembly is preparing to elect former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock as its next president for a one-year term.
Baerbock stands unopposed in the upcoming vote, which is widely expected to be a formality, Caliber.Az reports via German media.
The election will take place during a plenary session, with Baerbock as the sole candidate. The role of the General Assembly President is primarily ceremonial and should not be confused with the position of UN Secretary-General, which is currently held by António Guterres. Baerbock, 44, a prominent member of Germany’s Green Party, addressed the General Assembly last month, emphasizing her commitment to serve as a "unifier" and to represent all 193 member states equally, "both large and small."
