UN warns of capsizing risk to 2 boats carrying Rohingya people adrift in Sea
05 December 2023 06:12
The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has raised alarm about approximately 400 Rohingya Muslims believed to be stranded on two boats in the Andaman Sea, facing critical shortages of supplies.
The UNHCR fears that without rescue efforts, all aboard may face death, the AP reported.
The boats are reported to have set sail from Bangladesh about two weeks ago, and concerns have grown as they remain adrift.
The captain of one of the boats stated that they have run out of food and water, and the engine is damaged.
Rohingya Muslims often embark on a seasonal exodus from overcrowded refugee camps in Bangladesh. The number of Rohingya leaving the camps has increased due to food ration cuts and a rise in gang violence.
