US Air Force boosts missile defences for dispersed Pacific bases Preparation for potential China conflict

23 August 2024 16:54

The US Air Force is bolstering defences for a network of dispersed bases in the Pacific in preparation for a potential conflict with China.

While progress is being made under the Agile Combat Employment (ACE) concept, there is a need for more robust active base defences to protect these smaller bases from missile attacks, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin told US media, as per Caliber.Az.

The ACE strategy involves spreading air operations across multiple smaller bases, including civilian airports and makeshift airfields, to mitigate the risk of large-scale missile strikes on major bases.

Exercises like Bamboo Eagle have helped fine-tune these operations and train airmen in multi-role capabilities, but Allvin emphasized the importance of mobile missile defences that can be quickly repositioned as needed.

The Air Force is collaborating with the Army to develop effective countermeasures against ballistic and cruise missile threats. Despite the challenges, Allvin is optimistic about the progress but acknowledges the need for continued development of both infrastructure and defensive capabilities.
